We must continue to remember and memorialize those We must continue to remember and memorialize those who have been victims of forced disappearances and state-sanctioned violence. Those families who mourn, the loved ones who grieve, and those who still do not know what happened to the ones they hold dear. All victim's stories are important and those that miss them deserve the truth. People like Vladimir Nizharadze, born in Georgia, who was tried for counter-revolutionary activities and sentenced to be executed, and his personal property confiscated. Vera Varazashvili, the youngest among women who fell victim to the Georgian repressions of 1937-38. She was sentenced to death by firing squad after the accusation of being an active member of the Georgian National-Socialist-Fascist Organization. Or Stefane Kirkesali (Kirkesalishvili) who was a brilliant mind in the field of electrical engineering, and accused of counter-revolutionary activities, was tried by a military collegium composed of Matulevich, Zaryanov, Zhigur, and Kostiushko, and executed. La Coalición Internacional de Sitios de Concienci La Coalición Internacional de Sitios de Conciencia (CAPI) desea rendir homenaje a nuestro miembro argentino Museo Sitio de Memoria ESMA, ubicado en el antiguo sitio de la Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada (ESMA) en Buenos Aires, ya que se convirtió, el 19 de septiembre de 2023, en el primer Sitio del Patrimonio Mundial en ser nominado por su valor universal excepcional como Sitio Asociado con Recuerdos de Conflictos Recientes y otros recuerdos negativos y divisivos. El Museo Sitio de Memoria ESMA fue creado en 2019 a partir de las demandas y los esfuerzos de la sociedad civil para reimaginar uno de los antiguos sitios clandestinos de detención, tortura y exterminio más notorios de Argentina y la región en las décadas de 1970 y 1980, un período en el que muchos países latinoamericanos experimentaron dictaduras cívico-militares, en un lugar para aprender sobre este difícil pasado y promover una cultura de derechos humanos para las generaciones futuras. Grants for small museums and Museums for America. Our Methodology and Practice team has worked extensively on IMLS-supported projects, including with Conner Prairie, Herman-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses and two cohorts of member sites focused on change. The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC) would like to pay tribute to our Argentinean member Museo Sitio de Memoria ESMA, located at the Former Navy School of Mechanics site (ESMA) in Buenos Aires, as it became, on September 19, 2023, the first ever World Heritage Site to be nominated for its outstanding universal value as a Site Associated with Memories of Recent Conflicts and other negative and divisive memories. Museo Sitio de Memoria ESMA was created in 2019 from civil society demands and efforts to reimagine one of the most notorious former clandestine sites of detention, torture and extermination of Argentina and the region in the 1970s and 1980s, a period many Latin American countries experienced civil-military dictatorships, into a place to learn about this difficult past and promote a culture human rights for future generations. As stated by Argentina’s Human Rights Secretary Horacio Pietragalla Corti, “this international recognition constitutes a strong response to those who deny or seek to downplay state terrorism and the crimes of the last civil-military dictatorship.” Read our full statement via the link in our bio. #ESMAArgentina #SitiodeMemoriaESMA

Join us for an exploration of how the movement and the work continue into the present day. Speakers Nadia Maragha (Jane Addams Hull House Museum, Chicago), Dakota Russell (The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association, Salem, MA), and Katie Vogel (Henry Street Settlement, New York) will describe how their unique organizations tell the stories of the Settlement movement and carry on its vision for a new century. In the decades since, there are lots of takes, both positive and negative on it. Nonetheless, we find it a useful tool—but we’ve also been discussing how it might be revised for museums, heritage and cultural organizations in our current times. How would you frame a new ladder?
Tomorrow, September 15th, marks the 60th anniversa Tomorrow, September 15th, marks the 60th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. Perpetrated by the Ku Klux Klan, the bombing killed four young girls: Addie Mae Collins (14), Carol Denise McNair (11), Carole Robertson (14) and Cynthia Wesley (14). Speaking at the national conference, "There IS a Balm in Gilead," our Executive Director, Elizabeth Silkes, is in Birmingham this week to remember these lives lost and share thoughts on healing from racialized violence from our members around the world. There is no easy solution for this, but Sites of Conscience have taught us that of all the steps required to foster healing–to repair the social fabric and build a just, inclusive society following trauma–the most important may be: acknowledgment of harms done, accountability for violations, and collective action to ensure the harms do not recur. Access to truth, particularly historical truth, however, is essential to manifesting these steps and it is at great risk throughout the world today. This is especially so in the United States, where the history of slavery and the genocide of Native peoples is explicitly under attack, with suppression or denial of these histories increasingly the goal of conservative politicians, local and state governments and school boards. As we commemorate the innocent lives lost to racial hatred and violence in Birmingham–and so many other towns across the country–as a society we must make a commitment to face our history with courage. We must correct the history and connect the history by recentering historical truths and demanding better futures. There is no other way.
