Memorial Brumadinho (Brazil)

The Brumadinho Memorial was created to honor the victims of the 2019 collapse of the Córrego do Feijão mine dam in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, one of Brazil’s worst humanitarian tragedies. Investigations revealed that the disaster could have been avoided, as the mining company was aware of risks to the dam’s safety. The Memorial arose through the mobilization of victims’ families, who sought to preserve the dignity of their loved ones, many of whom were lost in the devastating mudflow. It stands as a tribute to the 272 lives cut short, including workers, community members, tourists, and two unborn children.

Located at the site of the collapse, the Memorial allows visitors to see the exact area where the dam once stood. Its striking architecture, chosen by family vote, incorporates symbolic spaces such as a forest of 272 yellow ipê trees, a meditation area, a monument-sculpture, a crystal druse, and two exhibition rooms dedicated to Memory and Testimony. It also holds a dignified resting place for the victims’ remains. Through exhibitions, educational programs, cultural events, and academic initiatives designed with the families, the Memorial fosters reflection on the disaster and aims to ensure that tragedies of this scale never happen again.
