Founded in 1999, John Brown Lives! (JBL!) is committed to preserving history, fostering civic engagement, and promoting social justice. Rooted in the legacy of abolitionist John Brown, JBL! connects past and present struggles for freedom through education, advocacy, and the arts. The organization runs various programs and events, including John Brown Day, the Blues at Timbuctoo Festival, and A Memorial Field, which engage diverse audiences in discussions about abolition, racial justice, and human rights. Through Hands-On History, JBL! also offers professional development for educators, artist residencies, and interactive field trips to inspire new generations. By fostering radical empathy and encouraging action, JBL! ensures that historical memory catalyzes meaningful change. JBL! is also the official Friends Group charged with the preservation, promotion and interpretation of the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in North Elba, New York.
