Hunter Circles is a grassroots organisation established in 2021 following the closure of large disability institutions in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. While the institutions closed, the isolation and exclusion created by decades of segregation did not.

They work alongside people with intellectual disability who experience profound social isolation, including people who have lived in institutions and others who have experienced long-term exclusion from community life. Their work strengthens freely given relationships and community connections so that people can be known, included and belong.

In partnership with the Council for Intellectual Disability and the University of Technology Sydney, they are also involved in systemic advocacy and community-led work connected to former institutional sites in New South Wales. Together, they advocate for people who lived in these institutions to be central to decisions about their future, and for approaches grounded in truth-telling, remembrance, recognition and repair. They seek to ensure this history informs action today so that segregation and exclusion are not repeated.
