William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum

The William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum is one of just a few African American cultural sites nationwide. The museum inspires the public with the story of an African American businessman who helped freedom seekers escape from slavery in the mid-1800s.

Today, the William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum educates the public about the life and times of William C. Goodridge and the Underground Railroad, inspiring people to connect with the past and explore the meaning of freedom in today’s society. The museum and its programs enhance the quality of life for York’s diverse population and attract visitors to the community.

The William C. Goodrdige Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum serves as a place of history, community, and art. It has provided tours and visits to schools and families, as well as business, civic, and tourist organizations. As a historical place of community, the museum has held events and programming focused on creating dialogue around education apartheid, the common threads that bind us, economic development, a black history art exhibit, and human trafficking. The museum has also provided interactive historical presentations by living history interpreters such as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Lydia Hamilton, Thaddeus Stevens and William C. Goodridge.
