This toolkit emerges from the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience’s project Addressing the Silences, a three-year initiative that brought together museums and community partners across the U.S. to confront exclusionary practices in the field. Historically, museums have often reinforced inequities by excluding communities and their stories. This project sought to change that reality, moving from reflection to action by building meaningful relationships, dismantling harmful systems, and co-creating projects that center silenced voices. The toolkit captures the lessons, practices, and resources shaped collectively by our diverse cohort, offering practical guidance for museums and communities committed to equity and inclusion.
