This #GivingTuesday, support the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC) as it equips communities around the world to counter revisionism and disinformation by documenting and sharing inclusive histories that advance accountability and justice.

ICSC and its member sites are at the forefront of this movement for memory, igniting collective action in over 75 countries–from supporting Afghan activists, forced from their country, to advocate for accountability from afar, to breaking silences around conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine, where many survivors are afraid to speak out due to stigma.

Earlier this week, our team had the chance to visit a Site of Conscience member in the Netherlands, Our Lord in the Attic, a museum located in the heart of the old city center of Amsterdam, hidden in a 17th-century canal house. The museum features narrow corridors and stairs leading to historically decorated living quarters, kitchens, and bedsteads, ending in the site's highlight: a complete church in the attic.

@museumopsolder has a permanent collection, which is always on display, but in addition, there are also temporary presentations or small exhibitions.

In our workshops and trainings, we talk a lot about the importance of building trust (and its companion, taking care) as museums and historic sites work to change narratives and become more inclusive places. Last week, @lindabnorris of the Methodology and Practice team visited a museum that beautifully demonstrated trust and care. The Ama Museum in Taipei Taiwan tells the story of comfort women, sexually enslaved by the Japanese during World War II. Through personal narratives, artwork and a future focus, we could see how the museum built trust with victims, and how those victims have entrusted all of us with the responsibility for creating more just futures. This Thursday, November 16th, at 10:00 am EST, join us for a conversation with Jen Kretser, Director of Climate Initiatives at the Wild Center, a U.S. Site of Conscience in the Adirondacks, and Denis Ngala, Founder of the Manene Cultural Trust, a member in Kenya, as they share experiences and strategies using nature as a springboard to foster a deeper understandings of how different communities—particularly Indigenous ones—have interpreted specific landscapes, how to encourage communities to care for the land in big and small ways, and how to develop innovative programming around the environment that promotes our shared humanity in an increasingly polarized world.

This week, ICSC staff members visited the Migratie

This week, ICSC staff members visited the Migratie Museum Migration (MMM), a member in Brussels, Belgium. The MMM tells the story of immigrant workers, the first arrivals at the Little Castle, expatriates, refugees, Europeans who moved freely within the EU, and all the others. It also pays tribute to the many migrants who have helped shape the city of Brussels.

The @migratie_museum_migration is also a member of our @migrationmuseumsnetwork.

The Methodology and Practice team is more far-flun

The Methodology and Practice team is more far-flung than usual this week! At conferences we explore new ideas and approaches and also get to share our work. This week, Braden Paynter is at the UK @museumsassociation conference and working with colleagues at @newcastleuni ; @lindabnorris is in Taiwan at the FIHRM-AP meeting and @staceymariegarcia is at the National Trust for Historic Preservation meeting in Washington, DC. Our goal: strengthening knowledge, skills and relationships so we can build more just futures together.
