In recent months, we have witnessed a troubling increase in efforts to undermine, silence, or erase memory work around the world. From the dismissal of leaders at key memory institutions, to the defunding of critical initiatives, to the restriction or manipulation of historical narratives, these attacks are not isolated, they are part of a broader pattern that seeks to weaken the power of memory and the pursuit of truth and justice.
On June 4, the Milei administration (Argentina) fired ICSC’s friend and colleague, Mayki Gorosito, the Executive Director of the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory (Museo Sitio de Memoria ESMA), in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mayki Gorosito had held the position since April 2022.
The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience expresses its support for memory workers, institutions, and communities committed to preserving truth and advancing justice. At a time when authoritarianism, historical denialism, and disinformation are on the rise, the protection of memory work is not optional but essential.
We call on governments, civil society, international organizations, and cultural institutions to recognize memory work as a vital component of democracy building, and to actively defend those who carry it forward. We stand in solidarity with all those defending the right to remember.
