Families Separated

One former inmate in the 1920s recalled daily life in The Workhouse:

“I used to see a lot of my mother, practically every day, but only in the distance. On that piece of land where I said we were (it’s now all on the front of the railings, all now tarmacked). Well, that was all built up a big square strip of green, with the clothes posts in, and they used to come and put the lines out.

We used to be on the other side of the railing. We could see them come out, shout to them. They used to wave back, but that was all you could do. They weren’t allowed to go across and talk to you. They’d got to put the sheet out or bedclothes or whatever it was they were washing, come and see if they were dry, take them back and bring another load out…

Then when she was in, you were separated more or less permanently from your parent.”
