Founded in 2021, The Canadian Library is a national remembrance and education initiative that transforms books into living memorials honouring Indigenous women, girls, men, boys, Two-Spirit people, and children who are missing, murdered, or who never returned home from residential schools. What began with a single donated IKEA BILLY bookcase has grown into more than 300 permanent installations across Canada, each serving as a welcoming space for learning, reflection, and dialogue. Through community book-covering workshops, educational presentations, installation launches, and collaborative partnerships with Indigenous communities, schools, libraries, police services, hospitals, museums, businesses, courts, and community organizations, The Canadian Library encourages Canadians to engage with Indigenous histories and the ongoing journey toward truth and reconciliation. Committed to accessibility and inclusion, the initiative ensures that people of all ages and abilities can participate. By preserving stories, fostering meaningful conversations, and inspiring collective action, The Canadian Library demonstrates that remembrance is a powerful catalyst for education, healing, and social change.
