Ebrahim Summers’ family was one of the last to be moved out of District Six. He witnessed the demolition, and on a daily basis watched how the bulldozers destroyed and flattened the houses, churches, schools, and shops, and erased the streets that used to be his playground. The streets he had played in “disappeared in front of my face…”
Every day, more and more places were erased. He had to walk over heaps of rubble when he went to visit his family.
He still often walks through the remaining streets of District Six and then winds his way up to the slopes of Table Mountain. “I go and sit there and I look down on District Six and here I find peace. I use Table Mountain as a place where I can go and pray… and I always pray for the people of District Six to come back.”
