Today Linda Norris of the Methodology and Practice Today Linda Norris of the Methodology and Practice team facilitated a workshop, “Can Anywhere Be a Site of Conscience” at the @insta_camoc meeting in New York. Participants from around the world shared images about places that matter, talked about communities, and traded their own symbols for continuing this work, from coffee cups to upside down trees. Thanks to all who came! @icomofficiel @icom.unitedstates

Last week, some of our Methodology and Practice te Last week, some of our Methodology and Practice team were in Tucson, Arizona to begin work on a project with the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail on a project to expand both stories about and audiences for the trail. We find the above concepts useful to explore expanding stories and narratives. Voice: who gets to tell the story? Scope: how can the story be expanded geographically or thru time? Agency: who takes action in the story? What happens if we change that? Centrality: can we change the people at the center of the story? If you’re interested in learning more about how we can collaborate on change-making, be in touch! @nationalparkservice
On September 14, ICSC member @winglukemuseum in S On September 14, ICSC member @winglukemuseum in Seattle, WA was the victim of a racially motivated hate crime that caused thousands of dollars of physical damage and inflicted trauma upon staff and community members. Said Executive Director Joël Barraquiel Tan after the event, “Through solidarity and partnership, we can make Seattle and the larger region a place of belonging and vibrant diversity. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

The Wing Luke Museum’s mission is to connect everyone to the rich history, dynamic cultures and art of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders through vivid storytelling and inspiring experiences to advance racial and social equity. They have long served as an important model for community action and building solidarity.

We stand with the museum in its call for cross-cultural solidarity—no matter where in the world you are. ICSC . encourages all museums and heritage organizations to develop ways to work collaboratively, breaking down boundaries and barriers.
At historical sites, the available historical evid At historical sites, the available historical evidence rarely tells the whole story. Longstanding systems of inequality and injustice have dismissed the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities, women and other marginalized groups to such an extent that often little evidence of their past lives exists today. How can Sites of Conscience and likeminded organizations navigate this difficult fact? How do we tell stories about the spaces and lives that have no verifiable, historical record connected to them?
Join us on October 19th, at 10:00am (E.T) for “Interpreting the Unknown: Being Adaptive as Places of Memory” as we offer strategies and insight into how Sites of Conscience can share histories even when they don't have all the facts.

We must continue to remember and memorialize those We must continue to remember and memorialize those who have been victims of forced disappearances and state-sanctioned violence. Those families who mourn, the loved ones who grieve, and those who still do not know what happened to the ones they hold dear. All victim's stories are important and those that miss them deserve the truth.

People like Vladimir Nizharadze, born in Georgia, who was tried for counter-revolutionary activities and sentenced to be executed, and his personal property confiscated. Vera Varazashvili, the youngest among women who fell victim to the Georgian repressions of 1937-38. She was sentenced to death by firing squad after the accusation of being an active member of the Georgian National-Socialist-Fascist Organization. Or Stefane Kirkesali (Kirkesalishvili) who was a brilliant mind in the field of electrical engineering, and accused of counter-revolutionary activities, was tried by a military collegium composed of Matulevich, Zaryanov, Zhigur, and Kostiushko, and executed.
