Sophiatown the Mix (South Africa)

trevorWhile it was by no means the only story of forced removal, Sophiatown’s particularities reflect the uniqueness of its experience as a truly multi-racial community prior to formal apartheid laws, and its experience of civil resistance in becoming the first site of forced removal in 1955. Between 1955 and 1962, Sophiatown’s streets and buildings were razed to the ground along with friendships, livelihoods, schools, and churches. Sophiatown the Mix (formerly Trevor Huddleston CR Memorial Centre) has a vision for a revived Sophiatown – where people of all backgrounds and experiences can be inspired to take action to promote humanitarian values and engage their communities across the country in initiatives which prize democracy through engagement in civil society.
