[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Complementing the one-on-one mentoring between individual sites, the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience hosted a capacity-building workshop and a two-day global conference in 2022 to enhance the capacity of Sites of Conscience to lead their communities in correcting historical records, amplifying new voices for change, and promoting democratic norms and respect for human rights.

Both virtual events were open and accessible to all Sites of Conscience members, with some sessions open to members’ local partners as well. Translation was available in Spanish, French, and Arabic:[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”“Collecting and Centering Communities’ Voices””][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]This global workshop directly addressed the urgent needs that Sites of Conscience members identified during the Coalition’s 2021 “Building Global Capacities for Inclusive Democracies” Global Summit, with a special focus on supporting vulnerable and marginalized populations in their communities by enhancing technical skills to carry out community-based oral history, archiving and documentation projects. The workshop was structured as a training and provided Sites of Conscience members with the skills to collect and amplify individual voices and lived experiences of marginalized people, particularly women, ethnic and religious minorities, who are so often excluded from positive public discourse and the historic narrative. The training was led by mentors and Coalition staff and will include best practices in the ethics of oral history collection with vulnerable communities; how to sensitively and inclusively memorialize individual and collective experiences; and how to engage long-standing community members to embrace inclusion of and support for marginalized groups through effective advocacy initiatives.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”“Correcting the Record“”][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

The workshop brought together the mentors and member sites supported under Phase One and the Coalition’s global membership to disseminate best practices gleaned from the projects.
