Corporación Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi, along with all Coalition member sites, has designed a program called Dialogues for Democracy. The Dialogues for Democracy help visitors draw connections between the past and the present by using the histories of the sites to inspire new conversations and action on pressing contemporary issues.
Human Rights Education Program
In partnership with the Chilean Ministry of Education, Corporación Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi hosts school groups and trains teachers on how to address the difficult history of the dictatorship in their classrooms. Through reflective tours of the Site, and by providing teachers with methodological tools and strategies, students make connections between state authoritarianism, the repression of human rights, and present-day conflicts.
Oral History Project
With the support of the Coalition and Memoria Abierta, and in collaboration with the Institute of Communication and Cinema of the University of Chile, work is underway to collect oral testimonies on the history of state terrorism in Chile. The project will gather testimonials from Villa Grimaldi survivors, starting in Santiago and branching out to expatriate communities worldwide. An exhibition of the audio-video archive will provide new perspectives on the history of state terrorism and provoke introspection on the violation of human rights, the question of collective responsibility and human ethics, and the struggle of human rights movements through memorialization.
A Space for Memory and Education
Together with the Municipality of Peñalolen, Corporación Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi is developing a Museum to provide Chileans with a space for the memory and education of human rights. In August 2005, Corporación Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi organized a seminar with local and international experts to develop this idea and social organizations are presently being consulted.
Railway Ties Exhibition
Railway ties that were used to weigh prisoners down when they were dropped to their death from helicopters into the Pacific Ocean have been excavated and granted to Corporación Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi. Once properly restored, these pieces will be used in a special exhibition as proof of the barbaric methods used by the military dictatorship. To this end, appropriate storage is being constructed in order to conserve the pieces.
Commemorative Activities and Cultural Events
In collaboration with a broad range of civic groups, Corporación Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi organizes large-scale religious and cultural public events that commemorate and promote an understanding of the magnitude of the period of military repression and the need for human rights in contemporary society through book launches, concerts, play and dance performances.
