Inaugurated in 1997, Parque por la Paz was built as a memorial over the ruins of the Villa Grimaldi property and provides a public space dedicated to remembering victims of human rights violations and to promoting human rights today, welcoming people from diverse political, cultural and religious backgrounds.
Former detainees guide visitors through the site, starting at the original foundations of the Villa Grimaldi house, where there is a small architectural model of the Terranova Barracks and surrounding landscape.
At the center of the Park lies the Patio of Desires and a mosaic fountain, providing space for meeting and reflection. Colorful mosaics are scattered throughout the Park on the ground, created from existing pieces of pavement found at the site to commemorate the detainees who were always blindfolded and sometimes only ever saw the ground.
Near the former stables, wooden reconstructions of former holding, solitary confinement and torture cells have been rebuilt on location to provide visitors with a physical sense of how difficult basic human functions like standing, sitting or even sleeping would have been a struggle. Opposite the former guard quarters, a Wall of Names contains engravings of the 226 people who disappeared at Villa Grimaldi, providing a space for contemplation and respect for all.
A room that was formerly used for creating false documents for the secret police (DINA) has now been transformed into a Memory Room, which exhibits photographs and personal momentos collected and arranged by families of former prisoners.
