Thousands of children came to Terezín with their parents and from Jewish orphanages. At Terezín, they were segregated by age and sex, 20 to 30 children to a group. Under the self-government of the ghetto, everything possible was done to protect the children from the difficult situation in the camp.
Each home had its own attendants and teachers, who secretly taught basic school subjects. Activities such as reading, recitals, theater performances and sports events were allowed. The drawings, poems, magazines and diaries of the young prisoners express homesickness, sorrow and injustice, but also hope for a better future.
Part of the collection of the Terezín Memorial, the thousands of children’s drawings left behind give evidence of the lives and activities of the children interned there. Ten thousand children were transported to the east; only about 100 of them survived.
