Dialogues for Democracy Program

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, along with all Coalition member sites, has designed a program called Dialogues for Democracy, a program that helps visitors draw connections between the past and the present by using the histories of the sites to inspire new conversations and action on pressing contemporary issues.

Other Programs

Permanent and temporary exhibitions
“Courage To Lead,” the main exhibit at the Visitor Center, in text and video, parallels the paths of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement. Jim Crow laws - racist laws that controlled society when Dr. King was born - are posted at the beginning of the exhibit. It ends with visitor Testimony and Response stations.

The site sponsors temporary exhibits that speak profoundly to the national dialogue on racism today. These serve as focal points for engagement on such issues as slavery, reparations, racial profiling, racial healing, institutional racism and discrimination.

Special events
The park co-sponsors special events such as a march and rally commemorating the 40th anniversary of the “I Have A Dream” speech.

The Visitor Center theater hosts live events including plays, storytellers, and a historic puppet show to provide different perspectives on the African American experience and the Civil Rights Movement. A regular series of Gospel concerts and speaker series is available in the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Educational Programs
The “Children Of Courage” permanent exhibit and video is geared towards younger visitors. It tells about the children of the Civil Rights Movement and ends with a challenge to today’s youth. During the school year the park offers a school services program for school groups. There is also a Junior Ranger program.
