Dialogues for Democracy

Maison des Esclaves, along with all Coalition member sites, has designed a program called Dialogues for Democracy. The Dialogues for Democracy help visitors draw connections between the past and the present by using the histories of the sites to inspire new conversations and action on pressing contemporary issues.

Other Programs

Reconciliation
Owned by the government of Senegal, Maison des Esclaves is not a museum in the typical sense of the word, but rather a “place of memory,” where people come in search of identity or self-reconciliation. It is the most highly-visited site in the country, with more than 75,000 visitors a year.

International Exchanges
Eloi Coly, the director of Maison des Esclaves, has participated in exchanges with several sites of slave history in the United States. The connections between these sites and Gorée complement and strengthen the stories each has to tell.

Educational Programs/Outreach
Throughout the school year, Maison des Esclaves welcomes school groups, and provides a crucial complement to the curriculum in schools severely limited by lack of funds.

Maison des Esclaves also has begun producing an audio visual program and other portable educational material, in order to reach audiences unable to come to the site.
