For over a hundred and fifty years, the streets of the Lower East Side have been the first stop for hundreds of thousands of immigrants arriving on American shores.
Here, generations of newcomers have toiled in sweatshops, struggled against poverty and racism, built thriving communities, and redefined American culture.
The Museum’s mission is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant experiences on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The Museum interprets the homes of immigrant families who lived at 97 Orchard Street from 1863 to 1935 as the starting point for public dialogues on immigration, the garment industry, cultural identity, and social welfare.
