The Liberation War Museum was established in 1996 by the Muktijuddha Smriti Trust to commemorate popular struggle and sacrifices that lead to emergence of independent Bangladesh. The Museum is the outcome of civic effort to disseminate non-partisan authentic history of the War of Independence.
The Museum currently holds over 11 thousand items in its collection, including rare photographs, documents, arms, ammunitions and materials used by freedom fighters and martyrs of the Liberation War. The Liberation War Museum excavated two killing fields near capital Dhaka with the assistance of the Bangladesh Army, and displays excavated materials and human remains of martyrs from the Jallad Khana (Butcher’s Den) killing field.
The Museum is housed in a three story building in the heart of Dhaka city, where the Pakistani reign of terror began. In 6 galleries, it presents the history and rich, synchronistically tolerant Bangalee cultural heritage, the uprising against British rule and united struggle for secular democracy and national rights during Pakistani military rule. Then, visitors witness genocide tragedies, armed resistance, refugee camps, the formation of Bangladesh government, the international dimension and the ultimate victory in December 1971. It is a living museum where history is unfolded, leading visitors to realize how the fundamental principles of the 1972 Bangladesh Constitution of democracy, secularism and nationalism evolved as basis for an independent Bangladesh.
