Dialogues for Democracy

The Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, along with all Coalition member sites, has designed a program called Dialogues for Democracy. The Dialogues for Democracy help visitors draw connections between the past and the present by using the histories of the sites to inspire new conversations and action on pressing contemporary issues.

Other Programs

In addition to tours of the Park, The National Park Service has created an off-site educational program for grades 3-6 focusing on Mrs. Roosevelt’s life and legacy.

Initiatives of Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK)
The Center’s early education programs included Youth Against Racism and Children of War (bringing together children from war-torn countries). Currently, Community Partnerships promote human rights for those who are often denied full participation in the community. Welfare Reforms and Human Rights, a reauthorization forum on welfare regulation and the Diversity Coalition, a partnership with schools and businesses, work to assure productive and fulfilling lives for disadvantaged youth.

The Girls’ Leadership Workshop promotes the empowerment of young women regionally, nationally and internationally. The nine-day leadership training program focuses on Eleanor Roosevelt as a role model.

ERVK has conducted human rights education training programs for secondary school teachers with the goal of developing a long-range, national human rights education curriculum.

ERVK’s week-long Elderhostel program on “Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Life and Works” features scholars and those who worked with or knew Mrs. Roosevelt. The ERVK Friends Committee hosts programs to strengthen the bond to the local community and volunteer as docents at Stone Cottage.

Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal Ceremony
The ERVK awards the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal to individuals making a significant contribution to society in the arts, citizenship, community service, education, philanthropy, and other humanitarian concerns that reflect Mrs. Roosevelt’s ideals.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Lectures: Human Rights the Unfinished Agenda
The Eleanor Roosevelt Lecture series have addressed Torture, Cruel and Inhuman Punishment; Genocide; Social and Economic Rights; the Rights of the Child; Gender Equality; Freedom of Opinion and Expression; and Political and Civil Rights; Racial Equality. Publication of the entire lecture series is planned.
