Dialogues for Democracy Program

District Six Museum, along with all Coalition member sites, has designed a program called Dialogues for Democracy. The Dialogues for Democracy help visitors draw connections between the past and the present by using the histories of the sites to inspire new conversations and action on pressing contemporary issues.

Other Programs

The Land Court
From the beginning, the Museum has been part of a process of restitution. The Museum educated claimants, and provided space for the Land Court and signing of the Accords.

A Place To Be Heard
The District Six Museum continues to play an active role in keeping alive the stories and memories of District Six, ever more important as the barren landscape of District Six transforms. By providing a forum for discussion and debate, it is a space where ordinary people can have a voice in the politics of their city.

Historical Archives
Through its historical work, the museum draws on the rich urbanity of District Six, offering this resource to the reconstruction of the city. It provides a venue for the display and processing of artifacts and a sound archive that deals with oral history in all its forms; music, poetry, sounds of the city, narratives, celebrations, etc.

Community Services
The community played an important role in providing care for the most vulnerable in District Six. The Museum partners in programs established by the Central Methodist Mission that attempt to step into the social vacuum created by the removals. These include providing a shelter for street children and a daycare center for children whose parents were displaced but still work in the city.

Educational Outreach
As part of an educational outreach mission, the Museum Ambassadors Programme trains teenagers to talk with their peers about the history of District Six in order to promote values of community and tolerance.
