“Rod’s Room” was originally a fine art exhibit created by Roderick Sauls. It is not a recreated domestic space, but rather a space of memory and memorialization. Visitors engage with fragments of memory embedded in the texture of the room as they listen to Rod’s voice - almost as if audible memory is seeping out of the walls.
The room is also made up of fragments of records about the buying and selling of slaves and texts of colonial discourses on racial identity. In this way, it juxtaposes the personal sense of identity against historic roots of institutional racism.
