Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site
Until the mid-1900s, racial segregation was a way of life in much of the southern United States. In the 1950s, following a decade of successful legal challenges to segregation, the American Civil Rights Movement was launched.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement until his assassination in 1968. He is recognized nationally and internationally for his efforts to promote civil and economic equality and world peace. The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site is located in the historic eastside Atlanta black community where King was reared and to which he later returned at the height of his activism.
Mission
The mission of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site is to protect and interpret for the benefit, inspiration, and education of present and future generations the place where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, where he lived, worked, worshipped and where he is buried.
