As First Lady of the United States, UN delegate and Chairman of the UN Commission on Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) has been called the social conscience of America and of the world. While Chair of the Committee on Human Rights, she spearheaded the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Ratified in 1948, it details all rights that every human being should possess. This she called her proudest achievement. Later, as a private citizen, she continued to speak out against racism, injustice, political, economic and social inequality and oppression.
The Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, managed by the National Park Service, was created in 1977 to commemorate the magnitude of her achievements and influence. The same legislation also mandated that the Secretary of the Interior enter into cooperative agreements with public or private entities to carry out educational programs related to the issues to which Mrs. Roosevelt devoted her intellect and concern. The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK) is the partner organization, which fulfills that role, dedicated to addressing the quality of life issues that defined Eleanor Roosevelt’s lifelong activities.
