MENA Sites of Conscience Launch Regional Network

The Arab Spring has presented just one more challenge to Arabic-speaking nations as they, like other countries around the world, struggle to memorialize periods of oppression and perseverance, tragedy and triumph. Just as long-term sectarian violence in Lebanon and anti-Palestinian discrimination in Jordan, recent violence against women in Egypt’s protest movement and democratic reforms in Morocco signify the need for public memory initiatives throughout the MENA region.

With both the past and the present in mind, our partners in the Middle East and North Africa have elected to launch a Sites of Conscience Regional Network after a successful introductory meeting in Morocco on January 18-20. This new network will facilitate the expansion of the memorialization movement through collaboration, international exchanges, and program evaluation.

The Coalition is thrilled to be working with so many enthusiastic new institutions eager to share and learn with our members throughout the world!
